A LOOK INTO THE PAST . CASA ALIAGA

THE EXPERIENCE

The wealth from the wool trade led the Maestrazgo to be populated with large mansions and palaces.

In La Iglesuela del Cid there are six palaces and it is rare to be able to visit them, as they are all private. The guided visit to the 16th century Casa Aliaga is unique, the house is paralyzed in time, just as it was sold by its last owner to the City Hall.

Visitors never cease to be surprised when they visit it because of its structure and its impressive rooms, the furniture it conserves, the great number of details and curious objects that can be found in its rooms that help to discover how the noble families of the rural areas used to live. Undoubtedly one of the best experiences in Maestrazgo.

Guided tours of the town:

Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 16:30 H.
Sundays at 12:00 H.

  • The stairs

The hidden staircase, a wooden spiral staircase that runs through all the floors from the false to the courtyard to escape in case of emergency. It is very well hidden and you can hardly see it if the guide does not mention it, and at the end of it there is the old latrine of the 16th century.

    Living room

The living room on the second floor, with a safe door that can be closed from the inside, isolating the main floor from the rest of the rooms, as well as the windows, which have locks to reinforce them from the inside, making it the safest room.

    Kitchen

The new kitchen, where you can see the evolution of it, finding in the same room a wood stove, a coal stove and the last butane stove, as well as all the dishes, glassware, pots, etc…
The old kitchen, with its large fireplace and lots of ceramic utensils for cooking, plus a lot of curiosities, such as a “nieblero”, to make wafers or fog, a “portable brazier” to carry the children the coals to school without getting cold, and so on.

    Office

The office, with many curious objects, such as a promotion border of the 1884 – 1885 course of the Faculty of Law of the Literary University of Valencia, with Alfonso Matutano Gil, owner of the house, a reproduction of a map of 1636, engravings of the XIX century that represent both liberals and Carlists, old photographs, books, inkwell, quinque, and even some old rubber diving glasses kept in their original case.

    Bedrooms

The main room, with an emblazoned bed, with a “Don Pedro”, a kind of high chamber pot, a mirror with candles for comfortable grooming, an old electric blanket, an ember bed heater, curious hangers and bed linen.
A complete modernist room, with bed, bedside tables, closet and double dressing table, eye-catching mirrors because they allow you to see your whole body even though they are high. With more than a century old, it is the most modern room in the house.
